Why does calling a prehistoric figure a woman instead of Venus change our thinking about the art?

Because calling it Venus immediately creates an assumption of it being a deity and in particular associates it with the Roman goddess.

Simply referring to it as a woman allows people to view it without those preconceptions being created.

Botticelli's Birth of Venus has become synonymous with beauty and the feminine image in the arts.
