I'm writing a fantasy YA book and I'm stuck! I need my protagonist to discover (through her mind-reading abilities) a secret about the antagonist (both are 17).
She'll spread the secret around-- and reap the consequences (remorse, guilt, etc) - thus helping her to make better choices in the future. It's a set-up to a larger scene.
I need something for her to spread...something that would really hurt the antagonist. It should be something that would crush the antagonist if it was exposed. Also, I need it to be verifiable by others...otherwise the antagonist could just deny it
SICKNESS?
THAT SHE HAS CANCER.
and her hair falls out.
pregnancy, rape, a parent/close relative gone to jail but everyone thinks they're dead/gone away to study, abortion, killed someone by accident?, lesbian, on drugs, can't have babies? (it's not really what some teens would care about though), raped someone?, got someone sent to the hospital, prostitution, etc.
hope that's alright. x
It could be that the other girl is a lesbian or has a huge heroine/ecstasy addiction. The girl may have an STD such as gential herpes or the girl may have screwed most of the football team.
pregnancy
drugs
alcohol abuse
failing grades
witch craft
lesbianism
gang violence
prostitution
anorexia
bulimia
sexually transmitted disease
to name a few.....
If it's verifiable by others, how is it a secret?
pregnant? something like that woudl be good...
The question
What would a teen girl not want her peers to know? Just about everything. Remember everything is about secrets and gossip when you are teen.
That she got reconstructive surgery when she was very young due to a birth defect.
That her parents are actually her older sister and her husband because her parents abandoned her.
That she thinks she is mixed raced. or one of her parents were.
That her mother is really a famous stripper.
that her father is doing 30 years in prison for 2nd degree murder --he shot a guy during an armed robbery.
That is she POOR. And shoplifts
That she already has an extensive juvenile record.
That she has an STD--she got at the age of 13 when she was raped by her brother's best friend.
That she was an Olympic hopeful in running until she hurt her legs.
She killed another teen in a auto accident.
Her mother wants to "turn her out" to help the family income.
