Are grammatical errors a major problem when sending out manuscript?

I'm after sending out my manuscript to a literary agent.

It was all neatly typed, proper spelling and properly laid out. I then sent it off with an appropriate cover letter and brief summary, along with a postcard for them to send back to me for the receipt of my manuscript. I also gave them a stamped addressed envelope, should they need to return it.

Now, that's all good..BUT after having laboriously proofread my story so many times, i recently discovered that i had overlooked 1 or 2 grammatical errors!!

When i saw it I almost got a stroke, coz I couldn't understand how I had overlooked them! But, as i said, there are only 1 or 2.

Do you think the agent would scrap my manuscript on account of those few errors, or would they, in turn, be willing to overlook it...considering the amount of effort i otherwise put into the manuscript?

Thanks

If the errors are few, occur in an otherwise clean and good-looking manuscript, in an otherwise intriguing story, and preferably not on the first few pages...I don't think they'll matter.

But, all readers are different and some have so many manuscripts that they are just looking for reasons to put some down and not bother with them. (This is why yours hopefully aren't in the first few pages. They are more likely to overlook them and keep reading if they are already hooked a little bit). Go ahead and clean them up for the next round of submissions, though, should they be necessary.

If you are serious about publishing, the best thing you can do is hire a proof-reader (and maybe an editor...the two are different despite what some people on these forums seem to think) to go over the manuscript in advance next time. For a single chapter, the fee is usually small and it could well make the difference in getting published and being tossed aside without any more than a skimming of the first paragraph.

Also, what kind of grammatical mistakes?

If it really is only 1 or 2, it's neither here nor there. Even published books have occasional typos.

But they aren't looking at your manuscript with regard to how hard you tried. They are looking at it for how good it is.

FIX IT

RESEND IT

GET AN EDITOR

You need to think about how many manuscripts these people get in a week. If they notice just one error... que the doubts

Good luck!

if the manuscript is really good i doubt if those few errors will make adifference.

Don't worry so much about it. That's why they have editors.

An agent might overlook the problem, he or she might not notice it.

But when you say that there are only 1 or two, then I suggest you proofread it again as I am expecting more to come up.

For publishers (those who publish your book without you shouldering a dime), a well written story and a flawless command of the language is needed.

If, and only if the manuscript contains excellent story line and technical aspects of it (such as grammar) are all well written, one or two errors MIGHT be overlook. Specially if the problems only arises at the middle... because at least then, they'll either be hook or not to your story.

Effort in writing the manuscript does not count.. at all. Publishers, except Vanity presses, are quite strict. They spend money to publish you so they will choose the manuscript that will sell the most.

EDIT: OMG, why are people thinking that editors are hired to fix grammar errors?

Editors are people who specialize in improving a work, not fix its problems. A publisher will not spend a dime on an editor to edit a manuscript that they do not like...

What is a secret a teen girl wouldn

I'm writing a fantasy YA book and I'm stuck! I need my protagonist to discover (through her mind-reading abilities) a secret about the antagonist (both are 17).

She'll spread the secret around-- and reap the consequences (remorse, guilt, etc) - thus helping her to make better choices in the future. It's a set-up to a larger scene.

I need something for her to spread...something that would really hurt the antagonist. It should be something that would crush the antagonist if it was exposed. Also, I need it to be verifiable by others...otherwise the antagonist could just deny it

SICKNESS?

THAT SHE HAS CANCER.

and her hair falls out.

pregnancy, rape, a parent/close relative gone to jail but everyone thinks they're dead/gone away to study, abortion, killed someone by accident?, lesbian, on drugs, can't have babies? (it's not really what some teens would care about though), raped someone?, got someone sent to the hospital, prostitution, etc.

hope that's alright. x

It could be that the other girl is a lesbian or has a huge heroine/ecstasy addiction. The girl may have an STD such as gential herpes or the girl may have screwed most of the football team.

pregnancy

drugs

alcohol abuse

failing grades

witch craft

lesbianism

gang violence

prostitution

anorexia

bulimia

sexually transmitted disease

to name a few.....

If it's verifiable by others, how is it a secret?

pregnant? something like that woudl be good...

The question

What would a teen girl not want her peers to know? Just about everything. Remember everything is about secrets and gossip when you are teen.

That she got reconstructive surgery when she was very young due to a birth defect.

That her parents are actually her older sister and her husband because her parents abandoned her.

That she thinks she is mixed raced. or one of her parents were.

That her mother is really a famous stripper.

that her father is doing 30 years in prison for 2nd degree murder --he shot a guy during an armed robbery.

That is she POOR. And shoplifts

That she already has an extensive juvenile record.

That she has an STD--she got at the age of 13 when she was raped by her brother's best friend.

That she was an Olympic hopeful in running until she hurt her legs.

She killed another teen in a auto accident.

Her mother wants to "turn her out" to help the family income.

How come yahoo is hiding my question?

Have I done something to offend the Yahoo gods? The last two questions I asked in PHILOSOPHY do not appear on the philosophy page? I would link you to them but THAT would be against Yahoo guidelines, but they DO appear in my profile!

I think when someone decided that being a Feminist meant I was breaking Yahoo guidelines and Yahoo SUPPORTED that asinine decision I think that I became persona non-grata in YA.

Have any of your experienced this before?

Yes. they a lot of times go in and out of existence, except in your profile.

I saw both of those questions, so I don't think they are being hidden. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I answered one of them. Also, you could try taking up your violation with customer service, I got a answer violation and I appealed it and they still said it was in violation, so I wrote customer service and they restored the question and apologized. They don't actually read the question, just the tag line I believe. They probably get 1000s of violations a day, I'm sure it has nothing to do with you personally.

Same thing here. Many of my questions did not go through to the main page and only received one answer much later. In other cases, you are rewarded with a nice violation, which means you lose fifteen points!

Yes, I answered it. If you have notifications on, you should be getting a message in your mail telling you your question is going to expire, would you like to extend it.

I suggest you delete the questions in your profile, BEFORE you get a violation.

Maybe they are afraid you will take all your "fans" and form a better answers, lol!

I have had this crazy thing happen before for the ways of the gods is not known to mortal men.. Yahoo is very strange when they censor a question when it hasn't been violated out right. The censors seem to be very literal and not that bright. Anyways, why not write your questions in the details so we cut and paste them to find them or barring that open up your profile so we can find the questions that way.

Add: LOL. Live and let live. I never violate anyone since I'm not for censorship.

Found one question but not the book one. However, the answer is no book deal at least that I know of. I personally know Morpheus and he's never been offered one. But I am sure with the fine quality of that writing that the two of us display I'm sure it's any day now that we will offered one, LOL.
